A sterling silver cuff. Maker's mark of George Shiebler, New York, number 5997, circa 1890: of conjoined medallions featuring Roman heads each on a stipled ground; diameter is 2 1/8 inches, weight is 0.85 troy ounces. George W. Shiebler and Co., New York, began his business in 1876 primarily making spoons and forks. The line expanded to include holloware and a broad range of imaginative jewelry. Shiebler was a highly skilled and innovative designer and he became known for his exceptional use of mixed metals and his medallion work, inspired by the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Raised Greek mottoes appeared on the articles giving them the appearance of the antique.
